How do you handle a child’s damaged or severely decayed permanent tooth? Let our Lake Havasu, AZ, pediatric dentists answer all of these questions and more. Find out when a crown or bridge might benefit your child.

Why might my little one need a dental crown?

This is a great question and one we hear quite a bit from parents. A dental crown is most often used in children whose permanent teeth have already come in. Your child might need to get a dental crown from one of our Lake Havasu children’s dentists if they have:

  • A severely decayed tooth that a dental filling won’t be able to properly restore
  • A tooth that is malformed or misshapen
  • A tooth that is damaged or weakened by trauma or an infection
  • A dental implant that needs to be covered

If your little one still has their baby teeth, a dental crown may be used to save a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed or to protect teeth if your child is at high-risk for developing decay.

Just like with adults, children can choose from different kinds of dental crowns, from stainless steel to porcelain. We can help you determine which dental crown is right for your child’s needs.

Does my child need a dental bridge?

If your child is already missing a permanent tooth then a dental bridge may be the best option for restoring their smile. Any child who is missing one to three teeth in a row could benefit from a dental bridge. There are different types of bridges available, but they require dental crowns to help support the false tooth. Tooth loss can affect your child’s speech, bite and ability to chew properly, but a dental bridge can prevent these issues.
