Could your smile benefit from what crowns and bridges have to offer?
Here in Lake Havasu City, AZ, our dentist is proud to provide comprehensive and tailored restorative care to make sure that when issues happen to your smile that you have restorative dentistry that you trust to get your healthy smile back. We are here to tell you more about crowns and bridges and whether they are right for you.
What are crowns and bridges?
A crown is one of the most commonly used dental restorations out there. It’s made to look just like the crown of a tooth (as the name so obviously implies); however, the restoration is hollow. This allows it to fit over a damaged tooth to cover the tooth and become its new outer surface. A crown is often placed over a tooth that is weak or damaged so badly that a dental filling or other restoration wouldn’t provide enough support. Even though crowns are often used for restorative purposes, some patients also choose to get a crown to improve the shape, size, or color of a malformed or discolored tooth.
A bridge, on the other hand, is designed to replace one or two missing teeth in a row using healthy neighboring teeth to support the false teeth. How does this work? Well, our Lake Havasu City restorative dentist will place two dental crowns over the two teeth that sit on either side of the gap. Once the crowns are cemented into place the false teeth are then connected to the crowns to replace missing teeth.
Who can benefit from crowns and bridges?
Since crowns can be used on their own or can be used to support a bridge or cover a dental implant, they are so versatile that many people can benefit from them. If you are missing a permanent tooth then a dental bridge might be the easiest and fastest way to get you that full smile again.
You may want to consider getting dental crowns if you have a tooth that is weak from decay, trauma, or an infection (often teeth that undergo root canal treatment will require a dental crown to protect it from further damage). You may also choose to get a crown if you have a seriously disfigured tooth that could benefit aesthetically from a crown.

While it’s not common for many people to assume that children will benefit from dental crowns, there are actually quite a few situations in which this dental restoration could actually improve your child’s smile. Our Lake Havasu, AZ, family dentist is here to tell you more about dental crowns and how they might be a boon to your child’s oral health.
To Protect Baby Teeth
Children begin to lose their baby teeth by around six years old; however, some teeth take much longer to fall out (this is often the case with molars, which don’t often fall out until your child is 12 or 13 years old). Of course, if a baby tooth falls out much sooner than it should this could cause an issue with the alignment of your child’s smile.
It’s our job as your Lake Havasu, AZ, family dentist to make sure that if your child is dealing with a cracked, fractured or weak baby tooth that we place a dental crown over it to protect it until it naturally falls out. This could prevent the need for more elaborate and complex orthodontic treatment down the road.
When a Filling Isn’t Enough
It’s not uncommon for children to face decay at some point during their childhood. With the rise in sugar consumption we are seeing more and more children developing cavities.
While maintaining good oral hygiene and routine care is essential to protecting against decay and gum disease, if we discover that your child is dealing with extensive decay that a dental filling won’t be able to fully support then we may recommend placing a dental crown over the tooth.
If a Tooth Requires Root Canal Therapy
No matter whether it’s a baby tooth or a permanent tooth, if your child is dealing with a toothache it’s important that you bring them in for treatment as soon as possible. One common cause of a toothache is an inflamed or infected dental pulp, a structure that lies within the tooth.
Once the pulp is infected it will need to be removed during a procedure known as root canal therapy. Of course, once the tooth has been treated it will require additional support and stability, which a dental crown will be able to provide.

Why might my little one need a dental crown?
This is a great question and one we hear quite a bit from parents. A dental crown is most often used in children whose permanent teeth have already come in. Your child might need to get a dental crown from one of our Lake Havasu children’s dentists if they have:
- A severely decayed tooth that a dental filling won’t be able to properly restore
- A tooth that is malformed or misshapen
- A tooth that is damaged or weakened by trauma or an infection
- A dental implant that needs to be covered
If your little one still has their baby teeth, a dental crown may be used to save a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed or to protect teeth if your child is at high-risk for developing decay.
Just like with adults, children can choose from different kinds of dental crowns, from stainless steel to porcelain. We can help you determine which dental crown is right for your child’s needs.
Does my child need a dental bridge?
If your child is already missing a permanent tooth then a dental bridge may be the best option for restoring their smile. Any child who is missing one to three teeth in a row could benefit from a dental bridge. There are different types of bridges available, but they require dental crowns to help support the false tooth. Tooth loss can affect your child’s speech, bite and ability to chew properly, but a dental bridge can prevent these issues.
